Making Space

Okay, the things you will need are: A set of clothing you don't mind dirtying with spray paint, including work gloves (unless you're like me and don't mind getting painted for the good of art); as many colors of spray paint as you want, but you should want black, white and a few colors; some different sized round objects; a mask if you are working indoors to protect you from fumes; a piece of poster board and a work space with at least one flat surface.

Here is my starting kit:

Okay, now to add the planets. You can start as big as you want, with whatever colors you want, and wherever you so please on the poster board (glossy side up!) I started with green and lightly spotted it with blue. Remember not to worry about roundness since the round objects do that for you!

Cover the planet/moon-to-be with a round object.

At this point you can stop adding planets if you wish, but I like to make many planets in a picture. So I do a red sphere in another part of the picture. I used a candle and I swirled the red paint as it was drying for a ripple effect.

Next is a small silver object.
<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/silver%20obect.jpg>

After adjusting the sizes of the planets and moons, cover them all. Get out your black paint and spray and spray in a moving motion, all over the round objects covering the planets. Covering everything in all black is not needed, as not doing so gives a nebula effect.

The next step is adding stars. Try as I might I am too pale to get a good image with my camera so spray a quick spray of white paint on your index finger and flick the white around the poster board.
<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/stars%20added.jpg>

After uncovering the planets and letting the board dry I sprayed white in a corner to resemble a white hot sun as well as adding a few black holes. To add a black hole, paint another color over the dried blank, and then spray another layer of black near the new color - but spray very close to the poster board! I also added a comet which you can do with silver or white paint in the following way: Placing the board on the flat surface I told you to have, turn the silver or white spray can upside down, press down quickly and release quickly and you have a comet.

<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/final%201%20part%202.jpg>

I played around a bit with different colors and advanced effects.

And there are wicked space paintings :)

2010-10-25 [wicked fae mage]: Never tried it. Even poster board would curl if it gets too wet though

2010-10-26 [*Phoenix*]: That's what I thought....Although I bet the board that you use with science fair projects wouldn't. They tend to be thicker. And cheap too.

2010-10-26 [wicked fae mage]: The boards I see are like 10-50 cents each...if you buy the big ones you could always cut them, I suppose.

2010-10-30 [*Phoenix*]: That would work.....

2010-10-30 [wicked fae mage]: Yes, yes. And maybe make a giant collage or have a cool gallery with them...

2010-10-31 [*Phoenix*]: Yeah. That would be cool!

2010-11-01 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah...*daydreams* If only I had more money to spend...

2010-11-07 [*Phoenix*]: Meeeee tooooo....

2010-11-07 [wicked fae mage]: I'm a broke American college student who will be living with her husband near campus and the near entirety of financial aid will be going toward the bills.

2010-11-08 [*Phoenix*]: I'm a high school Senior who looked for a job from Spring Break to the end of summer. Did I mention I live in Michigan? Now second to last in USA's unemployment. Ya. I ain't gettin a job.

2010-11-09 [wicked fae mage]: I live in southwestern Pennsylvania. This is a coal town. Other than that there are few jobs.

2010-11-13 [*Phoenix*]: I see.

2010-11-15 [wicked fae mage]: *nods* The holiday help is pretty much the only job that comes around.

2010-11-27 [*Phoenix*]: At least you have that. :]

2010-11-27 [wicked fae mage]: I fear working on black Friday

2010-12-03 [*Phoenix*]: That would be scary. O.O

2010-12-03 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah, beyond scary...that's a living nightmare, I'm sure

2010-12-04 [*Phoenix*]: I bet. I had to work at Goodwill during one of their "Super Saturdays." That was a little crazy so I can imagine that Black Friday would be about 50x worse.

2010-12-04 [wicked fae mage]: Amplify it a little more. People stampede through other people to get to TomTom and DVD's...it literally sounded like a herd of elephants was rushing the cash registers in Walmart after they cut the tape on the electronics

2010-12-06 [*Phoenix*]: Wowzers.....

2010-12-06 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah, for Tomtoms the navigation device for cars...it was only $20 less than normal that day...not like TV's which were $400 off and laptops that were $300 off...
